Introduction ofharmonic drive
Harmonic drive uses the controlled elastic deformation of the flexible element to transmit motion and power. It includes three basic components: the wave generator, flexible wheel and rigid wheel. The three components can be arbitrarily fixed one, another one as active, and the last one as driven to get reduction or growth transmission with fixed gear ration. Also it can be in form of two inputs and one output to get differential transmission (its principle is shown).


When the rigid wheel is fixed, the wave generator is active and the flexible wheel is driven, the elliptical cam deforms flexible wheel which teeth at the both end of long axis are fully engaged with rigid wheel while at the both end of minor axis the teeth are just completely disengaged. In the range of long axis and short axis of the wave generator, the teeth of flexible wheel and rigid wheel are in semi-engage state, called engaging-in while the others are in semi-detached state, called engaging-out. Due to the continuous rotation of the wave generator, these four cases change in turn and have been circulating constantly. Since the teeth of the flexible wheel are two less than the number of rigid wheel, when the wave generator rotation a week, flexible wheel turned in the opposite direction of the angle of the two teeth. Then it achieves a large reduction ratio.
